Director’s greeting message

Applied Public Economics and Policy focuses on the processes by which various types of policies and regulations are created, as well as the broader economic, political and social factors.

Dear students and colleagues,
I would like to welcome you to the Postgraduate Program (MSc) “Applied Public Economics and Policy.” In recent years, the emergence of both endogenous and exogenous disruptions in the economic system (such as the global financial crisis of 2007–2008, the COVID-19 pandemic, etc.), modern neo-protectionism, as well as the impressive capabilities in data management enabled by technological progress, have brought back to the forefront the crucial role of the state in the functioning of the economy. In such a constantly evolving socio-economic environment, understanding both how public policies are shaped and their impacts at the microeconomic and macroeconomic levels is of great importance for all stakeholders—policymakers, individuals, and businesses. In this context, the aim of the MSc “Applied Public Economics and Policy” is to provide students with the necessary knowledge to deepen their understanding of the scientific field of public economics, bringing them into contact with the most contemporary issues that concern and will continue to concern the public sector in the future. Through this process, the program aspires to develop specialized scientists capable of meeting the needs related to the effective administration of the public sector. To achieve this goal, the courses are taught by faculty members and academic associates with extensive academic and professional experience in the field of public economics.

In addition to the purely academic component of the Program, the educational process of our students will be enhanced through activities that connect theory with practical application, such as:

Events and seminars
Research collaborations
Visits to public sector organizations
Internship opportunities at the intersection of Applied Public Economics and Policy

The Program, aligned with the practices of a modern educational environment, provides students with advisory services for their academic and professional development. Distance learning has been selected as the teaching method in order to make the Program accessible to a wider range of students. Furthermore, the course schedule is fully compatible with the constraints of a demanding working environment. In order to accommodate professional obligations, the option of part-time study is also offered. Special care has been taken to enable students themselves to participate in shaping a highly personalized program consisting of cutting-edge thematic areas that respond to the individual interests of each student. Finally, I would like to thank both my colleagues and the administrative staff of the University of Piraeus for their valuable contribution to the implementation of this Postgraduate Program.

The Academic Director of the Program
